Strange wood - a true story

FRIDAY
There is a strange package in the mailbox. I’ve lost my mailbox key, so I have to carefully retrieve the regular post items with a barbeque tong (via the mail slot). Finally there's only the strange package left. It's too big to jimmy out via the mail slot, so I leave it in the mailbox. At this point though, I'm more than a bit curious - what could it be?
YESTERDAY
I get home, and the phone rings - It's one of the neighbors a few blocks down. He tells me a man has called him concerning my boyfriend’s cell, which has apparently been found at the local subway station. The man who found the phone called the last number dialed and got connected to my neighbor. The neighbor, who knows us from the co-op meetings, Googles our home number and calls me.

Long story long - this kind act leads to me leaving the mountain of work I was about to huddle under to go pick up my boyfriends phone.

I meet the man who found the phone at the subway access furthest from my flat, and after retrieving it, I find myself taking an unusual path home. It's here, I encounter a little girl quite obviously in distress. She's bawling “d ddaaddy!”

I ask her what's wrong, and she tells me she's lost her daddy. I ask her where she last saw him - She sniffs deeply and points, “Over there.”

“Well let’s go there and see” I say - We reach ‘over there’, and we're promptly located by a panic-stricken dad. I leave the happy reunion unnoticed, and continued homeward.

I stop at the video store/post office to pick up a letter I got a notice slip for this morning - Another strange package! Walking the last block home I rip open the package, and look inside - to my surprise, I find a little driftwood monster!
TODAY
Indeed a third little critter is sitting in our mailbox today. He's thinner than the others, and I'm able to slip him out the mail slot (yes, with a little help from my barbeque tongs). These overwhelmingly busy days have been lit up by this strange little mystery. Who is endowing us with woody beasts? And will another come tomorrow?

I so wish I'd find such creatures in my mailbox in place of junk and bills.

OOh, the suspense, the suspense! Whoever's doing this is full of fun. Can't wait to hear who it is. And will you ever get a mailbox key? Hahaha. :)

Weird indeed, hopefully a benevolent act rather than some David Lynch-ian macabreness.

You should have them neutered before they multiply!
